Taxonomic / nomenclatural notes: • Hudson & Gosse's (1886) [Ref.17291] monograph is the first accessible source of information on this species, that was originally discovered by T. Bolton. They write (vol.2, p.77): "Mr. T. Bolton (in 1884) published among his fly-leaves a Stephanops (S. bifurcus) with one long dorsal spine, and one short posterior spine slanting backwards and upwards, from the end of the lorica; both spines on the median line, and none on the foot." Stenroos' figure (1898:153, pl.2, fig.17 sub "Stephanops bifurcus Bolton n.sp.") seems to be the first accessible illustration.
• Authorship for this species is often credited to Bolton, but Bolton’s ‘publication among fly-leaves’ (1884) has not been published for the purpose of providing a public and permanent scientific record, as required for making the name available (ICZN Art.8). The name is therefore nomenclaturally available from Hudson & Gosse (1886) [Ref.17291]. |
