Taxonomic / nomenclatural notes:
The taxonomy of Trichocerca relicta Donner relative to T. obtusidens (Olofsson) requires further scrutiny. Conspecificity of the two has been suggested by De Smet (1988:14) [Ref.17147], who erroneously gave priority to T. relicta, the later published name. Segers (2007) [Ref.16970] took the same line, but recognized the senior name T. obtusidens as the valid species name. Both species are unmistakable however, by a different morphology of their toes, a character which is not usually subject to significant variation in this group: they are equal in T. relicta, but of clearly different length and strength in T. obtusidens. Both names are therefore tentatively retained as valid here, until more information becomes available, particularly on trophi morphology of T. obtusidens.

Ecology summary:
Periphytic and epibenthic in stagnant and running freshwater; also in peat bogs, marshes, paddy fields, and occasionally in athalassic oligosaline waters; detritus-rich sediments, submerged (macrophytes, moss), semi-emerse (sedges, reed), and floating (water ferns) vegetation, and on sand; haloxenic, eurythermic, with preference for cold-water habitats (Jersabek & Bolortsetseg, 2010) [Ref.18457]. NB: Ecology and distribution pattern probably blurred by confusions with T. obtusidens (Olofsson) (cf. Segers, 2003 [Ref.15833], who suggests these are synonyms) and T. brachyura (Gosse).
