Taxonomic / nomenclatural notes: • Lecane curvicornis (Murray) after Hauer (1938) [Ref.17262], Wang (1961, partim:figs.96a-c) [Ref.18125], Wulfert (1966) [Ref.17670], De Smet (1990) [Ref.17149], Segers (1995, partim:figs.4, 226-228) [Ref.15457]; ?Lecane sp. after Varghese (2006) [Ref.18892].
• Referring to previously suggested synonymies within the L. curvicornis-complex, Segers & Sanoamuang (2007:643) [Ref.16975] note: "A taxonomic suggestion we venture to make concerns L. curvicornis (Murray, 1913) and L. nitida (Murray, 1913). It has recently become evident that the two, which actually have quite different lorica morphology, differ in ecology and distribution as well: L. nitida is more strictly bound to littoral habitats than L. curvicornis, and is more pronouncedly warm-stenotherm. These arguments, in conjunction with the general paradigm shift in rotifer taxonomy towards less inclusive species concepts, a view stemming from molecular studies (e.g., Gómez et al., 2002), lead us to propose treating L. curvicornis (Murray, 1913) and L. nitida (Murray, 1913) as different species-level taxa rather than as conspecific morphological variants. This is in accordance with Koste and Shiel (1990), but contrary to the view of Segers (1995a, b), and implies that a number of other nominal taxa in the L. curvicornis – group may also need to be reconsidered (e.g., L. curvicornis var. miamiensis Myers, 1941)." |
